Does anyone know if this is comparable to the John Deere Type Special Purpose Oil that the manual for my Straight calls for in basically everything except the engine? Seems to me that SAE 80 would have a much higher viscosity than hydraulic fluid. Any helpful information greatly appreciated. As a far as the fluid, look on the pail for equivalencies or "replaces" such and such fluid.

From what I have seen of them, they are a common systems fluid just like the old or modern day Hygard. I don't think i have every seen a pail of John Deere oil on the premises. My dad has gotten so cheap that he buys most of his oil at Walmart. We have never had a component failure because of low quality oil. We have had most of our deere equipment in service since the late 70's, including C and C widepad crawlers with backhoes, and skidders, plus trenchers, cable plows, directional drills.

I find Deeres lubes and oils are top quality and they aren't the most expensive out there for shure. I will not use any of Deere's greeses as they don't stick around in plain berrings such as excavators and backhoes. We also have a specialty greese for track adjusters. I dont like cheep oils that is a sign of wrong additives or no additives.

I have several late model dozers that are at the 8 and 10 thousand hour marks and are fussy about what is put in them. The old Deeres will run on darnd near anything but reading lube lables isn't a scince comon sense will tell you if oil is equivilant in viscosity and right for the job.

For John Deere engines, there are certain motor oils that the company recommends. John Deere has also approved some oils that may be used in its place.

It can be used in any lawn mower, tractor, shredder, edger, generator or tiller with a four-cycle engine. Another is John Deere's Torq-Gard oil. This high-performing oil is recommended for high-speed four-stroke gasoline and diesel engines. Another company that manufactures motor oil compatible with John Deere is Sunoco.

For example, the Sunoco Catralube Range oil is designed to protect engines and transmissions. It reduces gear wear, improves friction control, and may extend the life of transmissions and brakes. Exxon also produces motor oils that meet John Deere's standards.

One example is the Exxon Superflo, which has a 10W grade that meets the highest American Petroleum Institute standards. Superflo is designed to prevent high-temperature deposits, oil thickening, and wearing down of the camshaft and hydraulic valve. Though it is commonly used with automobiles, it meets the standards for use with John Deere engines.

Using the lubricant recommended by John Deere reduces wear in the gearbox by preventing metal-to-metal contact. It also prevents rust from forming on metal parts, which can lead to scoring and keeps parts from overheating. You can check the oil in your John Deere gearbox by lowering the mower deck to its lowest position and removing the check plug from the side of the gearbox with an Allen wrench.

There are check plugs on two sides of the box. When you remove the check plug, oil should ooze from the hole, indicating the gearbox is full. If it does not, add more gear oil by squirting it into the hole until it runs back out. Then reinsert the check plug and wipe up any oil on the mower deck. First, make sure the seat platform is at its highest point. Then unscrew the bolts and screws holding the gearbox to the deck, releasing the drive-line coupler from the power take-off gearbox shaft and removing the three mower deck belt shields.

Unscrew one of the check plugs from the side of the gearbox and dump the oil into a container approved for oil. Refill the gearbox by setting it right-side-up and squirting gear lubricant in the check plug hole till it runs back out of the hole. Re-install the gearbox back onto the mower deck. Diana K. Have a safe and healthy New Yr. Regards, tstex. Back to top. For the little bit of oil that thing will need why not just throw some DEERE oil in it and be done with it??? Thanks Bob. I am not looking solely at cost Thanks, tstex. As demonstrated by an Amsoil and Shaffer salesman, much to their dismay, the Deere Hy-gard is supreme to just about any hydraulic oil you can find. Deere can boast of their oil. They are among the best. If you are super concerned about the "Best" oil for your Gator then one thing to do is to filter the oil before adding to the machine.

The Deere oil is fine for your Gator. Just use the John Deere oil. I work at a dealership and I have seen brake linings come apart in tractors using aftermarket hydraulic fluid. Also, it depends on what you are talking about. Generically speaking: - Engine - Regardless of temp, for most climates, you can run 10W in the engine safely, no matter what. Honestly, even if they were separate sumps, you still could use the same fluid in this case. DO NOT use straight hydraulic fluid or straight transmission fluids. You will not get as good of performance, and you will not have the right additives in your oil for the application.

Your rear axle final drives may be separate from your transmission. I believe they are. Asked in John Deere, Hydraulics What type of hydraulic fluid for john deere c?Agricultural machines, such as tractors, require specific oils to properly lubricate the transmission's moving gear assemblies.

In fact, tractors manufactured by John Deere need transmission oils designed for particular seasons, either warm or cold months. J20C and J20D transmission oils are both used in John Deere machines, but offer different lubricating properties.

The moving gears within a John Deere machine transmission undergo a lot of friction as they provide speed changes to the engine.

The transmission's metal parts need lubrication for smooth gear transitions, especially in colder weather. Cold weather makes transmission oil more viscous, creating more friction than necessary against the gears. A John Deere machine owner must place the correct oil viscosity within the transmission or expensive damage may occur from gears becoming stuck within their own lubrication.

Difference Between J20C & J20D Fluid

J20C transmission oil offers a high viscosity meant for mild temperatures and hot days. As the outside weather and transmission heat up during daily use, the J20C oil will slowly lose viscosity as the temperature increases. However, the oil begins as a thicker substance at room temperature, resulting in a reduced viscosity over the day's temperature rise that still lubricates the transmission's gears effectively. In contrast, J20D transmission oil offers a low-viscosity fluid at room temperature.

This oil is considered a winter grade lubrication fluid. John Deere machine owners must place this type of oil within the transmission for the winter months. As the outside temperature drops, the transmission oil's reaction is to immediately thicken, effectively clogging the transmission's gears.

However, J20D's initial low viscosity prevents gear clogging since it begins as a thin fluid and only thickens slightly, allowing the transmission to function in cold weather.

John Deere machine owners should not mix transmission oil types to create an all-season lubrication. Mixing the oils may result in costly damage to the transmission in extreme hot or cold weather. Make sure to remove all old oil from the transmission before changing to an alternative oil viscosity.
